Providing a Positive First Impression

We all understand that owning and operating a daycare facility comes with the task of having a positive parent experience. But what many owners and directors actually don't do is judge their own center with the reality of their expecting parents rating, concerns, and viewpoints.

As business owners and daycare directors, we tend to go through our day to day task and put some task on the back burned until we are "less busy." Unfortunately, in this industry, we don't really have time unless we are forced to make it.

Planning an small amount of time one day next week to put your expecting parents point of view on the top of your list can help you discover some negative attributes that if you correct, you can help grow your child enrollment, and of course, increase your revenues.

Once you have a morning or afternoon set aside, I want you to walk through the doors of your center and experience a tour. If you handle the tours yourself, walk it out in your mind as you walk around the center as to what you normally say during the tour. Make sure you are looking closely at all the classrooms, teacher interactions, office space, and any areas that parents are able to see.

In this tour, look out for the following things:

  • Is there any clutter or disorganized that needs to be done

  • Are the children sounding happy and having fun

  • Do you notice any smells

  • What are the selling points of your center, are those included on the tour

  • Are the parents given any marketing material, before, during, or after the tour. (One mistake I always see is the daycare giving away the entire enrollment pack on tours. This is putting money out the door. Instead give a small brochure or pamphlet. If they want to sign up, then the packet works.)

  • Are there any extra's you can provide to touring parents? May a touring parking spot or offer of a bottle water/coffee during the tour. These small touches are a huge selling factor.

Once your tour is complete, make sure you note anything that needs to be changed, added, or left out of the tour. We want to bring all the positive attributes of the tour out for them to experience and we need to make sure the negative behind the scene issues stay there. There is not a single center that doesn't have some kind of issue or problem in wait, but you can make those tiny adjusts to make sure you give your new expecting parents a tour they will remember. you already did the hard part of getting them in through the door, now you have the opportunity to "wow" them.
